By contrast, the June X-Men film Dark Phoenix performed poorly upon release due in part to poor critical reception. Outside of live action, animated superhero films have also achieved critical and financial success. These animated films think outside the box with these superheroes where these as live action films could cost too much money to make with little to no benefit from making a more narrow audience to see these films. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was released theatrically and was a critical success though a box-office failure.
